Management Job Opportunities in the Division of Earth Sciences

The Division of Earth Science (EAR) at the National Science Foundation is seeking candidates for the division director and head of integrated activities.

The EAR division director serves as a member of the GEO leadership team and as the directorate’s principal spokesperson for Earth sciences research. In collaboration with administrative personnel and the disciplinary programs and integrated activities section heads, the incumbent is responsible for the overall planning, management and commitment of budgeted funds for the division, and overseeing and managing the effective use of division staff and resources in meeting organizational goals and objectives. To this end and together with a variety of teams, responsibilities include directing the activities of EAR, assessing the needs and trends in Earth sciences research and education, developing breakthrough opportunities, implementing overall strategic planning and setting policy. The division director supervises and provides leadership with input and guidance from section heads, program officers, and administrative and support personnel. Additional responsibilities of the division director include the coordination of activities with other relevant programs within the foundation, other federal agencies, community organizations and international partners.

Appointment to this position may be on a Senior Executive Service (SES) career, SES limited-term appointment (1-3 years), or Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment.

The section head for integrated activities serves as a member of the division leadership team and as the directorate’s principal spokesperson for its cross-cutting activities. The incumbent is responsible for the overall planning, management and commitment of budgeted funds for the section, which includes the following programs: Instrumentation and Facilities, Geoinformatics, Education and Human Resources, Postdoctoral Fellowships, two major facilities (SAGE and GAGE) and cross-cutting research programs: Frontiers of Earth Sciences, Critical Zone Sciences, Paleo-Perspectives on Climate Change and GEOPRISMS. The incumbent guides the section in formulating and implementing its research objectives and manages its administrative, fiscal and personnel aspects. The responsibilities of the section head include coordination of activities with the division’s disciplinary programs section and other relevant organizations within the foundation, other federal agencies, community organizations and international partners.
