A molecular switch turns on and off.

This sequence of scanning tunneling microscope images shows how the engineered molecules (which appear as tiny bumps) can be switched on and off by changing the applied electric field. The box highlights one specific molecule. This molecule is OFF (red box) when researchers charge the surface to +1.0 volt, and ON (green box) when they switch the surface to -1.0 volt.
