ABSTRACT

This award will provide support for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career investigators to attend the 2023 Epigenetics Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) and Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Holderness, New Hampshire. These conferences will be focused on understanding how non-genetic information is inherited and influences phenotype across a wide range of organisms, including plants, animals, and fungi, and across multiple scales, from single-molecules to the phenomenological. The GRS provides an opportunity for students and postdoctoral researchers to share unpublished, cutting-edge research among peers, develop networks, and benefit from career mentoring. Discussion topics include epigenetic reprogramming during development, transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, and the evolution of chromatin.

The GRC will advance cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing through a scientific program that includes both leaders and newcomers to the field from across the world. The open exchange of ideas will promote the careers of early investigators and maintain the vibrancy and innovation of the epigenetics field. Discussion topics include heterochromatin, chromatin structure, RNA-directed processes, epigenome maintenance, transposable elements, and epigenetics and the environment.

The award is funded by the Genetic Mechanisms program (Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences) and the Developmental Systems program (Division of Integrative Organismal Systems) in the Directorate for Biological Sciences.

This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

Epigenetics refers to heritable information that is not encoded in the DNA. The Epigenetics Gordon Research Conference was held in Holderness, NH from August 6-11, 2023. The focus of the conference was Epigenetics Information: Mechanisms, Memory, and Inheritance.The field of epigenetics ranges from the phenomenological to detailed understanding of molecular mechanisms. This meeting focused on diverse systems, approaches, and experimental innovations to discern the core principles of non-genetic mechanisms of inheritance. Topics included: Chromatin Structure, RNA-directed Processes, Heterochromatin, Epigenome Maintenance, Transposable Elements Shaping the Genome, Epigenetic Information in Development, Programming and Reprogramming for the Next Generation, Epigenetic Inheritance Between Generations, and Epigenetics at the Interface between the Genome and the Environment. The funds provided by this award were used to fund registration and/or travel fees for early career researchers, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and new faculty.

The conference offered abundant opportunities to share the latest unpublished research through talks and poster sessions. Short flash talks highlighting the posters allowed many trainees to present their work to the entire audience. Researchers developed further connections across career stages during shared meals and afternoon activities.

Prior to the Gordon Research Conference, the Epigenetic Gordon Research Seminar was held at the same site on August 5-6, 2023. The theme of the seminar was Epigenetic Mechanisms: Molecular Memories, Development and Diversity. The seminar was exclusive to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, allowing them to develop connections and easily integrate into the larger conference when it began. Funds from the award supported registration and travel fees for the Seminar.
