ABSTRACT

This project is to support doctoral student travel and participation in the IEEE International Conference on Healthcare Informatics (ICHI 2019). The ICHI 2019 conference provides a supportive scientific forum for students focusing on computing, health- and bioinformatics. ICHI 2019 provides a forum for expert and peer critique of students' research with the goal of improving their science. Student participants will also have the opportunity to receive networking support and career advice from internationally-recognized experts. Overall, the travel support brings together students with experts who might not otherwise engage with one another and engage in multidisciplinary science targeting the area of health.

This project supports doctoral students by providing a Student Doctoral Consortium focused on encouraging students to learn from peers and experts from multiple perspectives to understand how innovative computing and informatics combine to make the most impact in the area of health. In addition, student participation in rapid talks and roundtable provided at the conference enables students to explore their science and see different career paths for researchers in this area. The ICHI 2019 conference exposes participants to different disciplinary approaches, supports networking with conference attendees and is designed to support the development of the next generation of scholars in health- and bioinformatics.

This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

PROJECT OUTCOMES REPORT

Disclaimer

This Project Outcomes Report for the General Public is displayed verbatim as submitted by the Principal Investigator (PI) for this award. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this Report are those of the PI and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation; NSF has not approved or endorsed its content.

The Doctoral Consortium (DC) at the IEEE International Conference on Healthcare Informatics (ICHI) 2019 was successfully held in Xi'an, China. The DC consisted of three major activities: (1) presentations of each participating student’s research, so that everyone at the Doctoral Consortium got feedbacks from senior researchers; (2) a panel discussion with four panelists and covered topics that are of high importance to doctoral students, including how to structure a research paper, careers in academia and industries. Participants who work in this highly interdisciplinary area benefited greatly from senior researchers’ guidance and peer students’ support. All of these have contributed to the development of scientific workforce in this highly interdisciplinary area.

This award supported 12 students’ travel to ICHI 2019 and the Doctoral Consortium in Xi’an, China. These students came from 12 different U.S.-based universities. Among them, 8 are female, a group that has been traditionally under-represented in the research of healthcare informatics. Among these, 7 students also presented their research paper in regular scientific session in ICHI 2019. It has been our great pleasure to support these promising young researchers in ICHI 2019. We found that the support from NSF has been very successful in promoting students’ interests in this area.
