ABSTRACT

The proposal requests travel funds enabling students to attend 2nd Career Workshop for Women and Minorities in Computer Architecture (CWWMCA-2015) to be held in Waikiki, Hawaii, USA, in conjunction with the 48th Annual IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO).
The Workshop for Women and Minorities in Computer Architecture provides a forum for sharing advanced academic and industrial research work focused on computer architecture and career development advices for women and minorities in academia, industrial and government labs. The workshop will also cover a wide range of topics with leading experts in the filed attending MICRO as keynote speakers, invited talks and panel focused on career development for women and other minorities in the field of computer architecture.

PROJECT OUTCOMES REPORT

Disclaimer

This Project Outcomes Report for the General Public is displayed verbatim as submitted by the Principal Investigator (PI) for this award. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this Report are those of the PI and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation; NSF has not approved or endorsed its content.

The workshop included keynotes and invited talks from well-known researchers from academia and industry, student poster session and short presentations, panel discussion on developing careers in academia, industrial research and government labs, and speed mentoring session for the students.

This workshop aimed to help the students and researchers from the minority groups by providing (i) networking opportunity to socialize and form a sense of community, (ii) mentoring and career advice from role models in the community to help them become successful in the future, and (iii) a platform for showcasing research to enhance their technical and presentation skill. We believe that this workshop offered a great platform for mentoring, networking, and promoting research for students and researchers.

This workshop had a direct impact on the participation of women and minorities in the field of computer architecture. The CWWMCA workshop, as well as the main MICRO conference, got strengthened as a result of the greater and more diverse attendance. We anticipate that the research results presented at the workshop, as well as the emphasis on interaction between academic researchers and industrial designers, will be carried back by attendees to their home institutions, resulting in heightened awareness and interests in science and technology, especially in computer architecture.
