ABSTRACT
This three-year project is to enable the participation of distinguished U.S. scientists at the VarSITI (Variability of the Sun and Its Terrestrial Impact) Meetings during 2016-2018. The VarSITI program is sponsored by the SCOSTEP (Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics) and it promotes international collaboration of solar-terrestrial researchers in data analysis, modeling, and theory to improve our understanding of how the solar variability affects the Earth. The related Meetings during 2016-2018 will serve as venues to discuss recent results on VarSITI-related projects, exchange ideas, and educate the next generation of solar-terrestrial researchers on integrated system's science. This three-year project supports the Strategic Goals of the AGS Division in discovery, learning, diversity, and interdisciplinary research.
PROJECT OUTCOMES REPORT
Disclaimer
This Project Outcomes Report for the General Public is displayed verbatim as submitted by the Principal Investigator (PI) for this award. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this Report are those of the PI and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation; NSF has not approved or endorsed its content.
The goal of the project is to enhance the international activities that attract key scientists and students from around the world working in solar-terrestrial studies by supporting the attendance of U.S. scientists to the VarSITI (Variability of the Sun and Its Terrestrial Impact) meetings/symposiums sponsored by SCOSTEP (Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics). SCOSTEP was established as an interdisciplinary body of ICSU (International Council for Science) to promote international activities in solar-terrestrial physics, and to organize and coordinate scientific programs designed to advance our understanding of the solar terrestrial relationship using space- and ground-based data, cutting-edge models, and theory. VarSITI is the current international scientific program launched on January 13, 2014 to enhance our understanding of solar-terrestrial relationship and its impacts on life and society.
Three VarSITI meetings/symposia were held to enhance all VarSITI activities during 2016 - 2018. The U.S. scientists that are sponsored through this project were essential for organizing key aspects of the meeting and the results that are discussed there. A total of twenty two U.S scientists were sponsored to participate to these symposia and made them success. Seven US scientist were supported to attend the First VarSITI General Symposium held on June 6-10, 2016 at Albena, Bulgaria. They provided three invited talks, four contribution talks, and one poster. They chaired three sessions and provided a great leadership to make the symposium success. Five US scientist were supported to attend the Second VarSITI General Symposium held on July 10-15, 2017 at Irkutsk, Russia. They provided three invited talks and three contribution talks. They chaired a session.Ten US scientist were supported to attend the 14th Quadrennial Solar-Terrestrial Physics Symposium held on July 9-13, 2018 at Toronto, Canada. They provided an invited talk, nine contribution talks, and a poster. They chaired a session and provided a great leadership to make the symposium success.
