ABSTRACT

The International Symposium on Bioinformatics Research and Applications (ISBRA) seeks to contribute to the rapid dissemination of latest research results and to foster the formation of research teams with the multidisciplinary expertise required to analyze the enormous datasets accumulated through genome sequencing, proteomic studies, phylogenetic analyses, and systems biology. Furthermore, ISBRA seeks to provide important formative experiences to graduate students and post-doctoral scholars, helping them to become future leaders in the field. The 11th ISBRA will be held at the Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia from June
7h to June 10th, 2015. Accepted extended abstracts will be published as volume 9096 in the Springer Verlag's Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics (LNBI) series. To ensure broad dissemination of research findings, full versions of 20-25 selected abstracts presented at the symposium will be published in peer-reviewed special issues of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, BMC Bioinformatics and BMC Genomics.

The 11th International Symposium on Bioinformatics Research and Applications (ISBRA 2015) was held at the Old Dominion University at Norfolk, Virginia, from June 7th to June 10th, 2015. The conference was a great success as reported by the participating researchers, developers, and practitioners working on all aspects of bioinformatics and computational biology and their applications. ISBRA 2015 drew over 110 attendees from Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kong), Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The symposium featured 54 oral presentations and 27 poster presentations based on the papers selected by the program committee from 98 full paper and 33 short abstract submissions. Four distinguished scientists gave keynote talks.

The travel award was used to fund 3 post-docs and 31 graduate students from 13 different universities in the United States. The travel award had a major impact on the symposium as it partially supported approximately 33% of the attendees (34 out of 111 attendees). The symposium proceedings were published by Spring Verlag and two special issues in prominent bioinformatics research journals (ACM/IEEE Transactions on Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, IEEE Transactions on Nanobiosciences,  BMC Bioinformatics, and BMC Genomics) are coming out in the near future that feature extended and full versions of selected papers.
