ABSTRACT

This award supoorts the initial development of the US hub of Future Earth Secretariat. Future Earth seeks to harness the insights and capacity of the global scientific community, development professions, and stakeholders to address these global problems. The Future Earth effort is based on the recognition that modern environmental problems can not be solved by physical science alone and rather requires the coordinated efforts of environmental scientists, social scientists, and stakeholders to meet the societal challenges
of global environmental change and a world transition to global sustainability. Future Earth seeks to advance a new way of doing science by directly emphasizing the co-design and co-production of knowledge with those who most need scientific information to make effective decisions to help manage a changing environment. The Future Earth programme is organized around three major themes: Dynamicplanet; Global Development; and Transformations toward Sustainability. Under the auspices of these three themes, the Secretariat will support workshops and other efforts to foster the co-design of research to enhance transdisciplinary efforts to inform solutions and decision making. The secretariat will also develop programmes and initiatives to educate the next generation of inter-disciplinary professionals on how to integrate global sustainability with human prosperity and will actively engage the public through an extensive communication and outreach effort.

PROJECT OUTCOMES REPORT

This Project Outcomes Report for the General Public is displayed verbatim as submitted by the Principal Investigator (PI) for this award. The globally distributed Secretariat of Future Earth proposed by our consortium is comprised of five global hubs in Montreal, Paris, Tokyo, Stockholm, and Colorado (CO). The CO Global Hub is a joint venture between University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado State University in Fort Collins. These Colorado-based institutions are widely recognized for their contributions and leadership in global environmental change and international development research.

Research Enabling: As a major functional responsibility of the CO Global Hub, we led a number of initiatives to better interact with Core Projects, Fast Track Initiatives (FTI), and Cluster Activities (CA) associated with Future Earth. The activities included hosting and organizing Core Project, FTI, and CA monthly webinars; organizing an all Core-Project workshop prior to the Paris “Our Common Future Under Climate Change” Conference in July 2015; being a liaison with specific Core Projects through attending their Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) meetings and providing support funding for these SSC meeting interactions.

Presentations: CO Global Hub representatives were invited to provide presentations (either in person or through video-conferencing methods) to update various interested groups/institutions on the current status and development of Future Earth at conferences and workshops in the US and internationally. Examples include invitations to Michigan State University Future Earth related to Food Energy Water Nexus symposium (February 2015); Science Policy Interface for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) sponsored by the Earth System Partnership Core Project in Lund (March 2015); Northern Eurasian Earth System Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) workshop in Prague (April 2015); Global Biodiversity Monitoring Workshop in New Haven (May 2015); IAMAS/iCACGP Annual Business meeting (webinar); Global Mountain Biodiversity Monitoring SSC meeting in Perth Scotland (October 2015); Aspen Global Change Institute Workshop on integrated observations and decision making (October 2015); and Asian Pacific Network Science Policy Interface workshop and early career proposal preparation workshop in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia.

Capacity Building: The CO Global Hub was the main organizer for a training workshop oriented to early career researchers held in December of 2015 prior to the Fall AGU meetings in Palo Alto CA. This 2-day workshop provided to early career researchers further insight on principles of co-design and co-production related to four of the 2025 Vision Challenges identified by the Future Earth Science and Engagement Committees. Funding was received from the Packard Foundation, with support of CO Global Hub staff.

In addition, CO Global Hub staff participated in an early career training effort held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in November 2015. The CO hub joined members of the Tokyo hub at the workshop to assist APN in presenting materials and leading activities at the workshop.

FE Colorado/START: During 2015, a MOU was negotiated between Future Earth and the START Secretariat.  This MOU led to a series of consultative meetings including a meeting in Paris, France between UNESCO, ISSC, ICSU, START and Future Earth resulting in the development of a collaborative strategy for capacity building. This was followed by a meeting in Honolulu co-organized between the CO Global Hub and START that resulted in the development of a draft capacity building strategy that was presented to and approved by the Future Earth Science and Engagement Committees in November, 2015.

Science Policy Interface: A number of critical activities related to science policy interface has involved the CO Global Hub. Meetings leading to the acceptance of the SDG’s by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2015 were critical to ensuring that good sc...
