June 1, 2021

Colleagues:

NSF/GEO/OCE is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Maurice Tivey as Section Head of the Marine Geosciences Section (MGS) in the Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE). Dr. Tivey will begin his new role as an IPA SES effective June 7, 2021.

Dr. Tivey served as a Program Director (IPA) in the Marine Geology and Geophysics Program in the MGS Section from 2015-2018, and we are excited to have him back in OCE in this new leadership role. Maurice received his undergraduate degree in Geology from Dalhousie University and his Ph.D. in Geological Oceanography from the University of Washington. He then moved back to the east coast for a Postdoctoral Scholar position at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which has remained his academic home for the rest of his career. Dr. Tivey served as the Department Chair in Geology and Geophysics for five years (2008-2013) after being promoted to the rank of Senior Scientist. He has sailed as Chief/Co-Chief Scientist on 21 research expeditions. Maurice is a Marine Geophysicist who currently serves as Columbus O’Donnell Iselin Senior Scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Please join me in congratulating Maurice in his new role of Section Head in the Division of Ocean Sciences in the Geosciences Directorate at NSF.

Sincerely,

Terry Quinn
Division Director, OCE
