New Rotators in Marine Geol. & Geophysics, and Physical Oceanography (1/10/17)

May 28, 2019

The Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE), Directorate for Geosciences, National Science Foundation is delighted to announce that two new “rotators” are joining our programs effective January, 2017.  Professor Larry Peterson from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is joining the Marine Geology and Geophysics (MGG) Program, and Professor George Voulgaris from the School of the Earth, Ocean and the Environment at the University of South Carolina is joining the Physical Oceanography Program.  These two outstanding scientists will bring their scientific expertise and community leadership to OCE at a critical time for oceanographic research, technology, and education.   More information on each is below, and please join us in welcoming them to OCE!

Larry C. Peterson is Professor of Marine Geosciences at RSMAS, where he has been a member of the faculty since earning his Ph.D. from Brown University in 1984. Dr. Peterson is a paleoceanographer who studies the history of climate from deep sea sediment sequences and has led or participated in more than a dozen coring and/or drilling expeditions in the Atlantic, Indian and western Pacific Oceans, as well as the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. His research interests focus on abrupt climate change, deep sea sedimentation processes, and the stable isotope geochemistry and paleoecology of foraminifera. Dr. Peterson has served the international ocean drilling community as a member of the IODP Science Planning Committee, the US Science Advisory Committee, and the ODP Site Survey Panel and is past editor of the AGU journal Paleoceanography and chair of the AGU Board of Journal Editors. Dr. Peterson served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Rosenstiel School from 2006 until 2010, and currently holds a joint appointment with the Department of Geological Sciences in Univ. of Miami’s College of Arts and Sciences.

George Voulgaris is a Professor in the School of the Earth, Ocean and the Environment at the University of South Carolina, where he has been faculty since 1998. He most recently served as Chair of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and the Associate Director of the School.  Dr. Voulgaris completed his Ph.D. at the University of Southampton, UK, and his undergraduate studies at the University of Patras in Greece. His research interests are in coastal physical oceanography and sediment transport processes. In recent years, he has focused on the utilization of coupled wave and circulation models and HF Radar measurements.  Dr. Voulgaris has authored / co-authored over 90 peer reviewed manuscripts, along with abstracts, technical reports, and other non-refereed publications.  He has graduated 8 PhD and 6 MS students.  He has also served as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research and currently serves as an Associate Editor for Continental Shelf Research. Voulgaris has participated in and chaired a number of peer review panels for the European Union and the Science Foundation of Ireland, and has been a visiting professor at the University of Rouen, France, University of Hamburg, Germany and University of Nanjing, China.

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
