Measuring temperature of incandescent basaltic trachyandesite lava
A scientist uses a thermal probe to measure the temperature of incandescent basaltic trachyandesite lava as it flows onto a snow bank in the Toludskoye lava field, which is in the southeastern part of the newly formed Tolbachik lava field.
Ben Edwards, a professor of Earth sciences at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through a RAPID (Grant for Rapid Response Research) grant (EAR 1321648) to study lava-snow interactions and their eruptive products of Tolbachik.
