About the Office of Strategic Initiatives

The Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI) works in partnership with the five divisions in NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate: Astronomical Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences and Physics.

OSI strives to effectively engage the excellence and creativity that exists across the broad mathematical and physical sciences research communities through strategic investments in novel, transformative and multidisciplinary projects.

OSI was established in 1995 and renamed in 2023. Originally the Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (OMA), it was charged with facilitating and supporting opportunities that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.
