Synergistic Activities Incubator

The Incubator for Synergistic Activities coordinates opportunities across the GEO Directorate and represents GEO in NSF-wide activities. The team leverages combined research experiences and education capabilities to add value to the geoscience community by representing and positioning GEO to address diverse national and international opportunities. In short, the incubator facilitates and advances cross-GEO and cross-NSF opportunities to synergize outcomes greater than their component parts, such as convergence research, international lead agency opportunities, and global centers. Efforts include:

Growing Convergence Research (GCR) RISE staff represent GEO on the interagency working group to manage the interdisplinary GCR program. The program requires collaborations with true convergence: the merging of ideas, approaches, and technologies from widely diverse fields of knowledge to stimulate innovation and discovery.

International Lead Agency Activities facilitate the collaboration of scientists at U.S. institutions with scientists in other countries. Currently, GEO participates in lead agency activities with UK Natural Environmental Research Council (DCL NSF 16-132), German Research Foundation (DFG; DCL NSF 23-113), Israel Binational Science Foundation (DCL NSF 21-119) and Swiss National Science Foundation (DCL NSF 23-049).

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE), launched the Global Centers Program in fiscal year 2023 (FY23). Global Centers is a cross-directorate funding opportunity implemented in partnership with international funding partner agencies. Global Centers supports large-scale, use-inspired research in collaboration with international partners to address global challenges that cannot be solved by any single country.
Additionally, this incubator handles public relations and outreach activities for RISE. Contact us at RISEoutreach@nsf.gov.
