Geoscience Education and Diversity
The RISE Education and Diversity Incubator leads matters related to education, talent development, outreach, and broadening participation for GEO. The incubator team shares knowledge, promotes best and consistent practices, and develops innovative programs and ideas across similar programs and functions. Priorities include:
- Broadening participation [Link to https://new.nsf.gov/funding/initiatives/broadening-participation]
- Learning, research, support and professional development for undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs and early career scholars
- Geoscience workforce development, including connections to industry and entrepreneurs such as INTERN, which provides graduate students with experiential learning opportunities through research internships in non-academic settings
- Engagement and support of discipline-based education researchers and other education geoscience-engaged professionals
RISE Education and Diversity Programs
The RISE Education & Diversity programs create a geoscience ecosystem approach to respond to community needs and to help address challenges in geoscience education including workforce development and capacity building. To create a more diverse, equitable scientific enterprise, programs address three main objectives: career development, leadership development, and culture change. Program examples include:
- Cultural Transformation in the Geoscience Community (CTGC)
- Geoscience Opportunities for Leadership in Diversity (GOLD-EN)
- Pathways into the Earth, Ocean, Polar and Atmospheric & Geospace Sciences (GEOPAths)
- Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)
- Faculty Early Development Program (CAREER)
- Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
- Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE)
- Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI)
- INTERN
- Programs with a postdoctoral level focus
- Programs with a graduate level focus
- Programs with an undergraduate level focus
- Programs with a K-12 level focus
