The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Engineering (ENG) highlights opportunities in engineering research and education in seven areas that are essential for U.S. competitiveness and resilience.

“NSF programs in engineering seek proposals that will expand what’s possible while making our Nation’s future more sustainable and prosperous,” said Susan Margulies, assistant director for Engineering. “We encourage engineering researchers from every state and territory and from any eligible institution to send us their very best ideas.”

The Engineering Directorate describes topics of special interest in seven Dear Colleague Letters: 

• Advanced manufacturing
• Advanced wireless
• Artificial intelligence
• Biotechnology
• Quantum information science and engineering
• Semiconductors and microelectronics
• Net-zero climate goals

“Engineers have unique expertise and methods to push the frontiers of knowledge and create innovative solutions. This is why the NSF Engineering Directorate supports workforce development, technology integration and centers, along with fundamental research projects,” said Margulies.

“NSF-funded engineering research and education are essential to advancing U.S. innovation strategies and the goals of the CHIPS and Science Act for our health, security and quality of life. Our investments will impact our future workplaces and jobs, the technologies in our homes, and the infrastructure and services we use every day.”

NSF welcomes proposals that broaden geographic and demographic participation to engage the full spectrum of diverse talent in STEM. Proposals from minority-serving institutions, emerging research institutions, primarily undergraduate institutions, two-year colleges, and institutions in EPSCoR-eligible jurisdictions, as well as collaborations between these institutions and those in non-EPSCoR jurisdictions, are encouraged.

For consideration during fiscal year 2024, proposals to Engineering Directorate programs without deadlines should be submitted by April 30, 2024. Proposals will continue to be accepted afterwards for consideration in future fiscal years.
