The National Science Board (NSB) today announced the launch of Science and Engineering Indicators for iPad. The application provides full content of the Science and Engineering Indicators (SEI) 2012--the latest edition available. The biennial SEI report is a comprehensive source of high-quality, quantitative data on the U.S. and international science and technology enterprise.
The free SEI app, available as "Science and Engineering Indicators" in the Apple App Store, employs a variety of user-friendly presentation styles to engage users with different information needs and processing preferences. An Internet connection is required to download the SEI app, but once downloaded, the content is available for offline use. The SEI App allows users to bookmark and share information as well as easily navigate the content, both by chapter and within chapters.
"With the increasing prevalence of digital technology and mobile devices, the National Science Board (NSB) is proud to provide what we hope is the first of several initiatives to improve the user experience and availability of our resources," said NSB Chairman Dan Arvizu. "The portability of the SEI application will facilitate access to these important data and trends for both existing and new audiences."
The SEI app provides users with a library of SEI-related content from which to choose, including a digest of key science and engineering indicators and the NSB's policy companions to SEI, which include: Research & Development, Innovation, and the Science and Engineering Workforce; and Diminishing Funding and Rising Expectations: Trends and Challenges for Public Research Universities.
The 2012 Science and Engineering Indicators include:
- Elementary and Secondary Mathematics and Science Education
- Higher Education in Science and Engineering
- Science and Engineering Labor Force
- Research and Development: National Trends and International Comparisons
- Academic Research and Development
- Industry, Technology, and the Global Marketplace
- Science and Technology: Public Attitudes and Understanding
- State Indicators
The next volume of SEI will be released in January 2014, and that edition is expected to be added to the SEI app library soon after the January publication. A version for Android-based tablets is in the works.
To download the free SEI app for iPad, visit the Apple App Store.
The NSB was established by Congress in 1950. It sets the policies of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and serves as an independent advisor to the president and Congress on broad national policy issues related to science and engineering. The NSB, by law, publishes Science and Engineering Indicators on or before January 15 of even-numbered years. SEI is prepared by NSF's National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics under the guidance of the NSB.
