Diversity and STEM: Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities 2023

Women, minorities, and persons with disabilities have historically been underrepresented in the science and engineering (S&E) enterprise. The report Diversity and STEM: Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities 2023 provides statistical information about these three groups in the context of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This biennial report assesses the current standing of women, persons from racial or ethnic minority groups, and persons with disabilities in STEM employment and S&E education in relation to other groups. Data are from the Census Bureau, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation.

Academic Institutions of Minority Faculty with Science, Engineering, and Health Doctorates

Although science, engineering, and health (SEH) doctorates awarded by U.S. institutions to minorities have been increasing in number and as a percentage over the past two decades, minority doctorate numbers and minority faculty numbers remain low. In 2008 underrepresented minorities earned about 9% of all SEH doctorates. Among SEH doctorate holders employed as faculty in universities and colleges, 13% were Asian, 4% were black, and 4% were Hispanic.
