Dr. Maria Zemankova is a program director at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) Directorate, in the Information & Intelligent Systems (IIS) Division, in Information Integration & Informatics (III) Program. Maria Zemankova joined the National Science Foundation as a Program Director in the Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) Division in 1988, with a year spent at the MITRE Corporation and a year the National Library of Medicine. At NSF, She has been instrumental in developing initiatives on Scientific Databases, Digital Libraries, and Biodiversity and Ecosystem Informatics, and has been active in cross-disciplinary initiatives, including Information Technology Research, Wireless Information Systems, Science of Design, Cyber Trust, Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation, Research Infrastructure, INSPIRE, Smart & Connected Health, Big Data and CyberLearning. In addition, she has been involved in educational programs, Research Experience for Undergraduates and Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education, and National Science Foundation Research Traineeship,  served on interagency working group for Global Change Data & Information Systems and international organization Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

Her research interests include intelligent information systems; information/knowledge organization, knowledge discovery, data mining, machine learning, privacy/security, visualization, information retrieval, social media, multimedia systems, spatio-temporal informatics, scientific databases, process modeling and management of uncertainty.


Maria Zemankova completed grammar school in Czech Republic, received her B.S. in Mathematics and Computing with minor in Psychology from the American University in Cairo, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Florida State University. She was a developer in a database start-up company, was on faculty of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, collaborated with researchers at the Oakridge National Laboratory and held a visiting position at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Maria Zemankova was a founding  Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems, is a member of ACM, AAAI, KDD, IEEE Vis, Sigma Xi, and in 1992, she received the ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award.
