Carmiña Londoño: Brief Biography
Dr. Londoño is the Deputy Division Director for the NSF Division of Electrical, Communications & Cyber Systems. Previously she was on detail as the Acting Deputy Division Director for the NSF Division of Engineering Education and Centers.
For five years she was a Program Director with the NSF Engineering Research Centers Program having oversight responsibility for five ERCs in the energy and infrastructure technology areas. Prior to her appointment in the NSF Engineering Directorate she co-managed the Materials World Network Program in the NSF Mathematical & Physical Sciences Directorate. In 2008 she joined the NSF Office of International Science and Engineering having programmatic responsibility for a multidisciplinary set of scientific collaborations with Latin America.
Dr. Londoño worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology for 13 years. She was the Group Leader of the Global Standards and Information Group which provided technical and policy support for standards and metrology to other U.S. government agencies and the private sector. Sponsored by American Institute of Physics in 1994 Dr. Londoño served as a Congressional Science Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science. Earlier, she was an optical engineer for 10 years with the Polaroid Corporation working on the design and testing of optical systems for medical and large-scale consumer products. She also spent three years at the AVCO Everett Research Laboratory designing and building diffraction limited optical resonators for high-energy excimer lasers under the Strategic Defense Initiative.
Carmiña Londoño received her PhD from the Electro-Optics Technology Center (Tufts University), MS in Optics (University of Arizona), and BS in Physics (University of Lowell). Dr. Londoño has authored optical engineering technical publications and holds two U.S. patents. She is a Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). Dr. Londoño has received several awards including the 2019 SPIE Directors’ Award, the 2017 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Physics Department at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell; the 2010 NSF Director’s Award for Program Management Excellence for the Partnership of International Research and Education Program; and the 2005 NIST Silver Medal for contributions to the Secretary of Commerce Standards Initiative.
