Report Memorandum # 96-8 March 13, 1996 FOREIGN STUDENTS IN JAPAN ---- An Update ---- The Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (Monbusho) recently updated the data on numbers of foreign students studying in higher educational institutions in Japan. (For previous data, see NSF/Tokyo Report Memorandum #95-7 dated February 18, 1995.) Data are from the Japanese Immigration Office, collected as of May 1, 1995, covering all individuals who entered Japan on student visas for enrollment in higher educational institutions, including graduate schools, universities, junior colleges, technical colleges and special training colleges. (Note that individuals entering Japan for the sole purpose of learning the Japanese language are not included.) The total number of foreign students enrolled in Japanese higher educational institutions as of May 1, 1995 was 53,847, an increase of only 60 (0.1%) over the previous year.
