WHAT IS NSF?

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent agency of the Federal Government established by Congress in 1950 to promote and advance scientific progress in the United States. We fulfill this responsibility primarily by funding research and education projects in science and engineering across all disciplines. NSF's program achievements have major scientific impact both nationally and internationally. Nearly 200,000 individuals, ranging from senior scientist working at industrial labs to high school students attending summer enrichment programs, are direct participants in NSF's programs.

WHERE IS NSF?

Housed in a 12-story, modern facility surrounding a spacious atrium, NSF is located at Stafford Place, 4201 Wilson Boulevard in the Ballston section of Arlington, Virginia. Because of its central location in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, our facility is convenient to hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and residential areas. NSF is close to the campuses of Marymount University and George Mason University and is just minutes away from downtown Washington, which offers scores of tourist attractions. Washington National Airport, also nearby, is readily accessible by auto or subway.
