The National Science Board (NSB, Board) will meet July 17-18, 2018, to address science and engineering policy issues relevant to the National Science Foundation (NSF).

On the first day of the meeting at 10:15 a.m., the Board will hear an engaging panel discussion on the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and the related research opportunities emerging in science and engineering fields.  The panel, Being Smart About AI will feature five experts in the field of AI. They are:

  • Lead Speaker and Panel Moderator: Dr. Andrew W. Moore, Dean, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University
  • Panelists:
    • Dr. Charles Isbell, Jr., Professor and Executive Associate Dean, Georgia Institute of Technology
    • Dr. Michael Jordan, Professor, University of California at Berkeley
    • Dr. Jim Kurose, Assistant Director, Computer and Information Science and Engineering at NSF and Assistant Director for Artificial Intelligence at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy
    • Dr. Daniela Rus, Professor and Director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT

Meeting sessions open to the public on Tuesday, July 17, 2018:

NSB Plenary (8:00 – 8:25 a.m.)

NSB Chair Diane Souvaine will give an overview of major issues and NSF Director France Córdova will give a brief presentation.

Committee on Oversight (8:25 – 9:15 a.m.)

The Committee on Oversight will receive a summary of the Merit Review retreat and then hear a presentation from NSF on the status of its Enterprise Risk Management program. NSF’s Inspector General and Chief Financial Officer will also provide their reports.

Committee on National Science and Engineering Policy (9:15 – 10:05 a.m.)

The Committee on National Science and Engineering Policy will receive an update on the “Reimagining Indicators” project. NSF’s National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics staff have developed preliminary plans for a summary report and thematic reports that will replace the biennial release of a single large report. At this meeting, the committee will make carefully considered choices regarding the thematic reports that will shape the future of this activity.

NSB Plenary – “Being Smart About AI” panel (10:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

The panel will highlight and discuss the latest developments in artificial intelligence and the research opportunities emerging in science and engineering fields.

Committee on Strategy (1:00 – 1:30 p.m.)

The Committee on Strategy will receive updates on NSF’s FY 2018 Appropriations and FY 2019 Budget Request.

In closed session, the committee will receive an update on NSF’s FY 2020 budget planning.

Committee on Awards and Facilities (1:30 – 2:00 p.m.)

The Committee on Awards and Facilities will receive a written update on the ongoing construction of the Regional Class Research Vessels. There will also be a discussion of the Board’s expectations for the information/action item sequences.

In closed session, the committee will consider four action items for awards. The committee will also receive one information item that may become an action item for the November 2018 Board meeting.

 

Meeting sessions open to the public on Wednesday, July 18, 2018:

Committee on External Engagement (8:00 – 8:50 a.m.)

The Committee on External Engagement will discuss the recent listening session held in conjunction with the Community College Innovation Challenge in Alexandria, Virginia and plans for the listening session scheduled for South Carolina in September. Plans for establishing an NSB Alumni Network and Congressional engagement will also be discussed.

Skilled Technical Workforce Taskforce (8:50 – 9:30 a.m.)

The Skilled Technical Workforce Taskforce will receive an update on the stakeholder meetings held in Washington, DC, June 12-14, 2018 and discuss focus areas for the Task Force.

NSB Plenary (11:50 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.)

The Board will hear presentations from NSF on its impact assessment of National Academies reports and on NSF’s efforts with the Board of International Scientific Organizations.

NSB Plenary (1:15 – 2:15 p.m.)

In addition to brief remarks from the NSB Chair and NSF Director, the Board will receive open committee reports, and vote on the proposed Board meeting calendar for CY 2019. The Board will also be briefed on NSF’s INCLUDES program.

In closed plenary session, the Board will hear closed committee reports, a presentation on the status of the Congressionally-mandated report on Midscale Research Infrastructure, and vote on four action items referred by the Committee on Awards and Facilities and one action item deferred from the May 2018 meeting.

In a closed plenary executive session, the Board will hear an update from the NSF Director on personnel issues.
