GEO selects Chantel Sabus as its budget expert

The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) has selected Chantel Sabus as the Staff Associate for Budget and Program Analysis.  

Prior to joining GEO, she was a Senior Program Analyst with the Budget Division of NSF’s Office of Budget, Finance and Award Management.She joined NSF as a Science Assistant, managing program resources and supporting research projects. Prior to her work at NSF, Sabus served as a chemist at Wyeth Research. 

During her NSF tenure, she has received several awards, including threeNSF Director’s Awards for Collaborative Integration, two NSF Director’s Awards forAdministrative Excellence and the Office of BudgetFinance and Award  Mangement Employee of the Month designation 

Ms. Sabus is an experienced budget analyst and leader, skilled in both project management and communications,” said Tim Patten, the Deputy Assistant Director for GEO. 

Sabus earned a diploma in accounting from Strayer University, an M.B.A in financial management from Iona College Hagan School of Business, a master’s degree in analytical chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and bachelor's degrees in biology and chemistry from East Carolina University.  

Sabus will succeed William Smith, who is retiring.

With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
