NSF/AGS March 2023 Update - Office Hours and Industry Networking Opportunities

March 15, 2023

Colleagues,

Greetings from a breezy and snowless DC region.  We know that a lot of your are dealing with interesting weather, so please stay safe.  Please see the announcements and opportunities below.

Announcements

The Advisory Committee for Geosciences and the Advisory Committee for the Office of Polar Programs will merge into one Advisory Committee of Geosciences effective July 1, 2023.

Funding Opportunities

There are a couple of updates related to funding opportunities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities:

  • The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) solicitation has been updated.  This solicitation includes multiple different tracks to enhance research and education at HBCUs.
  • Dear Colleague Letter has been released that invites Planning Grants for future HBCU-Excellence in Research (HBCU-EiR) proposals.

The upcoming topics for the 2023 NSF Convergence Accelerator Solicitation have been announced.  Among them is a potentially relevant option for our community, Track K:  Equitable Water Solutions.

GEO-EMBRACE

The Directorate for Geosciences has released a Dear Colleague Letter that reiterates GEO’s interest in receiving proposal submissions from individuals and institutions traditionally underserved by NSF.  The DCL also announces the launch of the GEO EMpowering BRoader Academic Capacity and Education (GEO-EMBRACE) web portalwhich highlights existing pertinent NSF and GEO opportunities.

As part of the GEO-EMBRACE activities, future AGS Non-R1 Virtual Office Hours (VOHs) will become part of the monthly GEO-EMBRACE VOH during which faculty members and students in other GEO disciplines can engage with program directors across different GEO divisions/office. If there are many AGS guests in attendance with questions solely relevant to AGS, we can open an AGS breakout room. Otherwise, AGS attendees can listen to questions and concerns from those in other GEO disciplines to gain a broader perspective and to potentially network/collaborate with others other AGS.

The first GEO-EMBRACE VOH will be on 21 March 2023 between 4-5 PM Eastern Time. Please register to attend using this link (https://nsf.zoomgov.com/meeting/register/vJItd-qtpz4rGvCTM5zGrX_GA3EhEDh_Urw).

NSF-NOAA-Industry Networking Events on Climate and Catastrophe Modeling

Please consider attending a series of virtual discussions which are focused on the needs and mutual interests of academics in the climate/catastrophe modeling space with the insurance industry and regulators.  The goal is to build understanding between parties and possible approaches for use-inspired basic research to help better predict and asses extreme climate events and associated risks.

Panelists at the events will include experts from primary insurance, reinsurance, and regulatory groups who will discuss the need to blend catastrophe models and climate models to better inform risks. The forum will also be an opportunity for participants to hear industry representatives share thoughts about future needs and areas for collaboration as we face the challenges of a changing climate, to ask questions, and seek more information.

These events build on years of collaboration between NOAA and the insurance industry, as well as NSF’s increased interest in engaging academics with industry to advance use-inspired basic research that addresses pressing national needs in climate science and assessment.

You must register to attend – please visit each of the links below to register:

Thank you and please feel free to share widely.

Best regards,
