NSF/AGS Early February 2023 Update - NSF/NOAA IUCRC Partnership

February 9, 2023

Colleagues,

We hope you are well.  Please see the below items that we hope are of interest to you.

NSF PAPPG Update

The new PAPPG (NSF 23-1) is now in effect for all proposals submitted from this point forward.  You can see the summary of changes to the PAPPG here:  Link.  Of particular interest:

  • Further standardization of the Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support document is included, and the requirement to use SciENcv will be effective in October 2023.
  • NSF program officers will be requesting updated Current and Pending Support documents prior to making a funding recommendation.
  • The institutional AOR must certify that the organization has a plan in place for safe and inclusive research for any proposal that proposes to conduct off-campus or off-site research.
  • A Concept Outline is required prior to the submission of a RAPID, EAGER, RAISE, or Planning proposal.  Concept Outlines can be emailed to a program or submitted through the Program Suitability & Proposal Concept Tool.

Employment Opportunity

The Directorate for Geosciences is seeking a rotator program director with climate experience that will interface with NSF’s Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP).

Funding Opportunities

Dear Colleague Letter:  NSF-Swiss Lead Agency Opportunity - NSF and the Swiss National Science Foundation have developed a Lead Agency Opportunity which will allow proposers from both countries to submit a collaborative proposal that will undergo a single review process at the Lead Agency.  Please see the DCL and the links therein for more information.

Global Centers Program - This is a new program to fund international, interdisciplinary collaborative research centers that will apply best practices of broadening participation and community engagement to develop use-inspired research on climate change and clean energy.  NSF partner countries in this inaugural Global Centers competition are Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

NSF/NOAA IUCRC Partnership

NOAA engagements with the insurance and reinsurance industry have revealed a strong interest in the catastrophe modeling area to work with climate modelers to help improve estimates of future risks from climate change.

NOAA and NSF/GEO are partnering to facilitate that dialog. We would like to invite you to an initial webinar on Feb 17 from 3 to 4 PM ET to introduce the NSF industry-university cooperative research centers (IUCRC) program. IUCRCs foster use-inspired research that could speed advances in the prediction of risks induced by rapid climate change.   Registration is required. Please click here to register.  Once registered, you will receive a link to the webinar. So please save the time and date on your calendar.

NOAA , NSF, and others are partnering to offer additional webinars in a series over the next couple of months to bring catastrophe modelers and others in industry together to explore interests and possibilities of engaging university faculty and researchers.  If you have questions, please contact Barbara Ransom (bransom@nsf.gov).

Thank you, and as usual, please feel free to disseminate widely.

Best regards,
