NSF/AGS Update - Early January 2023

January 5, 2023

Colleagues,

Happy New Year!  We wish you all the best in 2023.  Below are a number of updates and opportunities.

Federal Budget

The FY23 Federal Budget has been signed, and the overall numbers for NSF are very positive.  Per usual, however, the exact distribution within NSF will be unknown until later in the year.  AGS encourages the community to continue to send in proposals.

AGS Outreach

AGS will have a significant presence at the AMS Annual Meeting in Denver next week.  Please feel free to stop by our exhibit hall booth, engage in informal chats in the hallways, and let your program directors know about any interesting talks or posters.

For AMS attendees, please also note the NSF Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, January 11th at 12:15pm regarding NSF Funding Opportunities in Innovation and GEO-Entrepreneurship.

Employment Opportunity

AGS would like to announce the recruitment for a rotator program director position for the Climate and Large-scale Dynamics program.  Please see the general IPA Rotator announcement for further information and how to apply.  Questions about the rotator position can be addressed to Eric DeWeaver (edeweave@nsf.gov).

Relevant Solicitations

  • The Geosciences Open Science Ecosystem (GEO OSE) solicitation has been released.  The intent of GEO OSE is to advance computational and data-driven research approaches, promote openness and broad participation, and catalyze innovative uses of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) in the geosciences.  A webinar will be held on January 20th, at 1pm eastern.
  • The Pathways into the Earth, Ocean, Polar and Atmospheric & Geospace Sciences (GEOPAths) solicitation has been updated.  The primary goal of the GEOPAths funding opportunity is to increase the number of students pursuing undergraduate and/or postgraduate degrees in geosciences through the design and testing of novel approaches that engage students in authentic, career-relevant experiences.
  • The Cultural Transformation in the Geosciences Community (CTGC) solicitation has also been updated.  The CTGC funding opportunity invites creative proposals to foster an innovative and inclusive geoscience community that reflects the diversity of the United States and is ready and well prepared to understand how the Earth system can continue to sustain society and propose solutions to the complex challenges society is facing due to climate and environmental change.
  • NSF has released a Dear Colleague Letter for the GRANTED initiative:   Growing Research Access for Nationally Transformative Equity and Diversity (GRANTED) Conferences and Workshops.  NSF invites requests to fund conferences, symposia, and workshops that center on developing nationally transformative ideas and scalable models to strengthen the Nation’s research enterprise, particularly at emerging research and minority-serving institutions.

National Academies Workshop

The National Academies will be hosting a Workshop on Tipping Points, Cascading Impacts, and Interacting Risks in the Earth System on January 17-19th.  Registration and additional information can be found at this link.

Thank you, and please feel free to disseminate widely.

National Science Foundation

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
