NSF/AGS Update Early December 2022 - Facility Updates and More

December 9, 2022

Colleagues,

We hope you are well as we enter the holiday and major conference season.  AGS will have representation at the upcoming AGU and AMS meetings both virtually and in-person.  Please stop by the Geosciences exhibit hall booth at AGU and the AGS exhibit hall both at AMS.  At AGU, NSF program directors will be giving lightning talks on a variety of program and opportunities.  Additionally, if you have particular talks/posters that you want to highlight at either meeting, feel free to let your relevant program director know.

Facility Updates

  • Please take note of the Save the Date announcement for the NSF Facilities for Atmospheric Research and Education (FARE) User’s Workshop to be held at NCAR the week of September 18th, 2023.   There are two main goals of the workshop:
    • Increase awareness and familiarize the community with the expanded FARE Program, which includes the Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities (LAOF) and the Community Instruments and Facilities (CIF), and provide guidance to new users in submitting scientific proposals that plan to use one or more of the available FARE assets for research and education.
    • Create a venue for the community to facilitate continued discussions related to science drivers, emerging technologies, and community needs associated with observational atmospheric research and to form and strengthen partnerships and sustained innovative collaboration.
  • AGS would also like to announce that NCAR and the University of Wyoming have worked diligently to clear up the pandemic backlog in aircraft deployment requests. AGS welcomes new requests for the use of the NSF/NCAR C-130 and the Gulfstream V aircraft for research via the FARE FIRP solicitation. The new Wyoming King Air (UWKA-2) is undergoing modification and will be available for research in spring/summer 2024.

Employment Opportunity

AGS is seeking rotator candidates for the Paleoclimate Program.  Please see the general IPA Rotator announcement for further information and how to apply.  Questions about the Paleoclimate rotator position can be addressed to David Verardo (dverardo@nsf.gov).

Relevant Solicitations

  • The Convergence Research Institute, under NSF’s Convergence Accelerator, has announced an opportunity for a six-week training program with the theme of “Tackling Climate-Induced Challenges with AI”.  The call for applicants is now open.

  • The latest Campus Cyberinfrastructure solicitation has been released.  This is a program run out of NSF’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate and is designed to invest in coordinated campus-level cyberinfrastructure improvements, innovation, integration, and engineering for science applications and distributed research projects.

  • Current NSF awardees are eligible to apply for funding for graduate student research internships at the Air Force Research Laboratory.  Please see the Dear Colleague Letter on this opportunity, and please note that the list of disciplines is not comprehensive and that AFRL does support Geoscience research.

Thank you and please feel free to share widely.

Best regards,

National Science Foundation

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
