NSF/AGS Early FY 23 Update

October 4, 2022

Colleagues,

Welcome to federal Fiscal Year 2023!  There are a host of new or updated solicitations that have recently been released that we hope you will consider.

Funding Opportunities

  • The new Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-1 solicitation has been released.  Preliminary proposals are due by January 5th, 2023.  AGS has been extremely successful in the MsRI-1 program since it was created, with awards for the new Wyoming King Air research aircraft and the ASCENT aerosol network.
  • The AGS Postdoctoral Fellowship solicitation has been updated.  Minor updates include an increase in stipend and research allowances and clarifying the eligibility language.
  • The new Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI) solicitation has been released.  AGS-related research has benefited from solicitation over the past several years.
  • The EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement Program:  Track 2 Focused EPSCoR Collaborations solicitation has also been released.  One key item of interest here is that the topical focus area for FY2023/2024 is “advancing climate change research and resilience capacity to expand opportunities for disproportionately affected communities.”
  • The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) has released a Dear Colleague Letter encouraging participation in the Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers program.  An example of an AGS-related IUCRC award is the Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center at San Jose State.
  • Speaking of wildfires, NSF has released a new Dear Colleague Letter:  Planning Proposals to Catalyze Innovative and Inclusive Wildland Fire Science through Diverse Collaborations.  The planning proposals are targeted at creative strategies and new collaborations aimed at bringing together diverse perspectives for building fire science research capacity and improving understanding of the use, causes and consequences of future wildland fires.
  • The new NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) Directorate has launched a program for entrepreneurial fellowships for engineers and scientists.

Workshop Notice

The Interagency Committee on Advancing Meteorological Services (ICAMS) is hosting a Wildland Fire Workshop on Wednesday, October 12th, 2022 from 11:00 – 15:00 Eastern Time.  The theme for the workshop is Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) Fire Predication Needs and Opportunities.  Further information and registration information can be found here:  https://www.icams-portal.gov/meetings/firewx/fireworkshop.html

Rotator Opportunity – Paleoclimate Program Director

The Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks rotator candidates for the position of program director for the Paleoclimate (PC) program. Please refer to the Dear Colleague Letter that serves as an announcement of opportunity to become a program director through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA). IPA rotators come to NSF on temporary (1-4 year) assignments and serve in a full-time program management role alongside NSF permanent staff. The responsibilities of the NSF Program Director include long-range planning and budget development for the program, the administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, and coordination and partnership with other programs in NSF (such as P4CLIMATE), other Federal agencies, and organizations.

The advantage to NSF of the rotator arrangement is that it brings in new ideas and viewpoints from the scientific community, and the advantage to the rotator and home institution is that the rotator gains increased visibility and a full appreciation of the scientific landscape across the US. Rotators are also allowed Independent Research/Development (IRD) plans that provide time to maintain involvement with professional research and mentoring. IPAs remain employees of their home institution and NSF provides an award to the institution to cover the cost of the individual. The candidate would ideally start by Spring 2023. Official application materials should be submitted per the instructions in the Dear Colleague Letter (https://tinyurl.com/yumz8v85).

Questions about the position can be directed to Dave Verardo, program director in PC (dverardo@nsf.gov). Applications received prior to November 1, 2022, will be prioritized. NSF is an equal opportunity employer.

Thank you, and as always, please feel free to disseminate this message widely.

Best regards,

Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS)
Directorate for Geosciences (GEO)
National Science Foundation (NSF)

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
