NSF/AGS Mid-February Update - Virtual Office Hours and More

February 18, 2022

Colleagues,

Please see below for the registration links to the upcoming office hours, a call for nominations for the National Medal of Science, and new or updated solicitations.

Virtual Office Hours

To broaden participation in AGS programs and solicitations, AGS will host two Virtual Office Hours (VOHs) in March 2022 that are focused on Non-R1 Academic Institutions (e.g., Community Colleges, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Undergraduate, Masters, and R2 Institutions). We will discuss a variety of topics related to NSF processes geared toward scientists, staff, and administrators (e.g., members of the Sponsored Research Office) at these institutions. The VOHs will include opportunities for AGS Program Officers and NSF Grants Officers to answer questions and listen to community input. The VOHs are during:

    • 16 March 2022 (Wednesday), 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Eastern Time
    • 24 March 2022 (Thursday), 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Eastern Time

Please register to attend either (or both) of these VOHs by 5 PM EST March 11 using this link: https://nsf.zoomgov.com/meeting/register/vJItf-mupzMiGoV4-SKxQ7kQuUfBUBxpXos

National Medal of Science Nominations

The National Medal of Science is the highest honor for American scientists and engineers.  The National Medal of Science is awarded to individuals deserving special recognition by reason of outstanding contributions to knowledge or the total impact of their work on the current state of the chemical, physical, biological, social or behavioral sciences; mathematics; or engineering. Anyone can nominate for the National Medal of Science by submitting a short description of the nominee’s contribution to the field and three letters of support at www.nsf.gov/od/nms/medal.jsp.  Nomination packages are due by May 20, 2022.

New or Updated DCLs and Solicitations

Dear Colleague Letter:  Directorate of Geosciences-Veterans Education and Training Supplement (GEO-VETS) Opportunities - GEO-VETS funding will offer U.S. veterans who are students, K-12 teachers, or 2-year college faculty an opportunity to work with active GEO grantees to conduct research and to be involved in fieldwork related to NSF-funded research programs.

Dear Colleague Letter: Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Supplement Opportunity - The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) activity is designed to enhance the professional development of science educators through participation in new or on-going NSF-funded research projects. GEO strongly encourages its grantees to make special efforts to identify talented teachers for participation in this opportunity.

Civic Innovation Challenge: A research and action competition driven by community priorities – The Directorate for Geosciences has joined the Civic Innovation Challenge (CIVIC) for this updated solicitation.  One of the two proposal themes is “Living in a changing climate: pre-disaster action around adaptation, resilience, and mitigation”.  A webinar will be held on Friday, February 25th from 1:30 to 3:00pm eastern to explain the solicitation and answer questions.  Please register for the webinar here:  https://nsf.zoomgov.com/webinar/register/WN_ZMlZsvX1QRubdkvu4CakOw.

Dear Colleague Letter:  Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) Supplement Funding Opportunity - This supplemental funding opportunity is available to provide graduate students with experiential learning opportunities through research internships to acquire core professional competencies and skills to support careers in any sector of the U.S. economy.

Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) Proposals - GOALI is a type of proposal that seeks to stimulate collaboration between academic research institutions and industry.  GOALI proposals should focus on research that addresses shared interests by academic researchers and industrial partners. The research should further scientific and engineering foundations to enable future breakthrough technologies with the potential to address critical industry needs. Industry involvement assures that the research is industrially relevant. Principal Investigators are expected to integrate their research objectives with educational and industrial needs.

EarthCube Call for Notebooks

EarthCube is issuing its 3rd Call for Notebooks as primary, peer-reviewed submissions to a digital proceedings for this year’s EarthCube Annual Meeting. Submitted notebooks should highlight a tool (i.e., software, service, library, dataset, standard), explaining and demonstrating interactively how the tool may be used to address a significant problem in geoscience.  Notebook abstracts are due March 8th.  Please see further information at earthcube.org/post/call-for-notebooks-cfn-22.

Thank you, and as always, please feel free to distribute this message widely.  If you wish to be added to this listserv, please email Nick Anderson at nanderso@nsf.gov.

Best regards,

National Science Foundation

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
