Haffke joins OPP on temporary assignment with Arctic Science section

May 29, 2020

Dr. Colene Haffke has joined OPP's Arctic Sciences section and will be assisting Dr. Marc Stieglitz with the Arctic Natural Sciences program. Dr. Haffke earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, in Earth System Science in 2015. She then joined the Arctic and Antarctic Science sections as a Science Assistant first helping the Arctic Section and then the Antarctic Section with their proposal review and management processes. At the end of her 2-year term at NSF, Colene transitioned to the position of Deputy Program Manager and Senior Support Scientist at NASA HQ in the Cryospheric Sciences Program in a contract position. In that capacity, she helped manage research awards to study land and sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctica and High-Mountain Asia, IceBridge science and operations and the ICESat-2 mission. Her duties included managing existing awards (~150 awards across seven program portfolios); organizing review panels for new award selections; representing Cryospheric Sciences within NASA Headquarters and at the interagency level; serving as NASA representative at scientific meetings; supervising interns; and providing expert guidance on Earth System Science research.

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
