Nearly half of people with one mental illness also experience another mental illness at the same time. This is leading researchers to shift their focus away from individual disorders and search instead for common mechanisms or risk factors that might cause all types of mental disorders. The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering.
