Michigan Tech Physicists Use Cloud Chamber to Better Understand the Atmosphere and Rain Droplets.

Turbulent Cloud Chamber

NSF funded scientists use a "cloud in a box" to study the mixing of aerosols and turbulence.

December 13, 2016

Atmospheric physicists at Michigan Tech use a turbulence-generating cloud chamber to better understand climate change through rain droplets as they form in clouds. The cloud chamber is different from any other in that the cloud inside is turbulent and researchers can keep a cloud for as long as they want to study it. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation through the Major Research Instrumentation program.

Proceedings of the National Academies of Science has released an abstract on the research at: http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2016/11/22/1612686113.abstract

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
