Often one of the major bottlenecks of research analyzing connections between Earth's deep structure and seismic energy is the large amount of data it can produce. Liqiang Wang and Po Chen of the University Wyoming found this to be true:  No matter the method for running their codes, the input/output (I/O) was too great; just reading and accessing their data was daunting. The team's research could carry on with the help of Blue Waters, a sustained petascale powerhouse supercomputer.Full Story

With a fiscal year 2020 budget of $8.3 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
