Flawed Diamonds Promise Sensory Perfection

Telephone numbers or other contact information may be out of date; please see current contact information at media contacts.By extending the coherence time of electron states to over half a second, a team of scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University has improved the performance of one of the most potent sensors of magnetic fields on the nanoscale--a diamond defect no bigger than a pair of atoms called a nitrogen vacancy center. With a fiscal year 2020 budget of $8.3 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards.
