E. coli cultures and populations of self-replicating digital organisms are two of the model systems that BEACON scientists will use to observe evolution in action. The genomes of digital organisms vary randomly and are subject to natural selection in their digital environment by the same mechanism that Darwin discovered operates throughout the biological world. Experimental evolution in biological and digital systems will provide research insights in both directions between biology and computer science.
