Time-lapse image of balloon launch at South Pole Station

A time-lapse image of a balloon launch at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officer launches a balloon weekly at the South Pole to gather atmospheric data from the cleanest air on Earth. This photo was taken about one week before the sun rose above the horizon for the first time in six months. The sun sets below the horizon in March and reappears in September.
