Visualization showing 550 million light-year portion of model universe

A visualization showing a 550 million light-year portion of a model universe. Such simulations are used to compare cosmological theories to observational data.

[Development of the N-body simulation code Abacus and the generation of the AbacusCosmos simulation suite was partially funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (grant AST 1313285).]

This visualization is from the AbacusCosmos N-body simulation suite (Garrison et al. 2018, Astrophysical Journal, 236, 43). Learn more about this image Here. (Date image taken: 2018; date originally posted to NSF Multimedia Gallery: Nov. 5, 2021)
