Developing Artificial Pancreas
Graduate student Tony Tan conducts an experiment, part of a project by the Georgia Tech/Emory Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues (GTEC) to develop an implantable, tissue-engineered artificial pancreas. The artificial pancreas will regulate insulin for more than a year before needing replacement in a minor surgical procedure. It will be 10 to 20 years before these technologies result in routine procedures in humans.
GTEC was created in 1998 and is funded by the National Science Foundation and matching grants from the institutions and the Georgia Research Alliance. (Year of image: 2001)
