Math and Science Partnerships, Florida (Image 1)
A middle school student describes a mathematical image at the Summer Institute for Middle School Math Teachers in Broward County, Fla.
The summer institute, which trains middle school math teachers, is sponsored by the Institute for Standards Mapped Graduate Education and Mentoring Math and Science Partnership (SMGEM) program.
SMGEM is a partnership between Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and the Broward County School District, Broward County, Fla. The institute creates and delivers a unique curriculum for graduate level, middle grade teacher education as an extension of the MST (Master in Science in Teaching) degree program of the FAU Department of Mathematical Sciences. Major components of the program include a sequence of special evening MST classes for teachers, presented in Broward County; intensive summer institutes, with student camp; biannual weekend pedagogy conferences and follow-up meetings; and an online community. The program significantly raises the performance of participating teachers and correspondingly the standardized test scores of their students.
The SMGEM program is supported by National Science Foundation Math and Science Partnership program under grant 04-12342. Further information about SMGEM is available here.
