Society Expeditions

Society Expeditions of Seattle, Washington, is planning seven cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula during the 1999-2000 season using the M/V World Discoverer. 

M/V WORLD DISCOVERER

The vessel is registered in Liberia; call sign is ELDU3.  The vessel is 87 meters in length, 15.20 meters in breadth and has a draft of 4.45 meters.  Power is provided by two non-reversible "MAK" 8m452 diesel engines driving one "KAMEWA" propeller through clutches and reduction gear with total output of 2 x 2,400 bhp at 500 rpm.  The vessel is equipped with a main transmitter for single side band voice and telegraphy, continuous between 10 kHZ and 30 mHZ.  There are emergency transmitters and receivers and one VHF transceiver with 63 channels.  INMARSAT number is 1242744 DISC X.  The World Discoverer carries four 25-person SOLAS inflatable life rafts, two launches with capacity for 70 passengers and 3 crew apiece, two life boats with 30-person capacity and ten rubber boats with a capacity for 15 persons each.  World Discoverer can accom-modate approximately 120-130 passengers and 75 crew.
