Forging the path

Rutgers-Newark graduate students  with high-school student and a ground-penetrating radar

Rutgers-Newark graduate students instruct high-school students in how to conduct and interpret a ground-penetrating radar survey. The activity was part of Highlands to Piedmont: Geoscience Scholar Program, a NSF-funded project designed to increase the number of minority students in the geosciences.

Garden State LSAMP Scholar Melissa Belot from Rutgers University-Newark explains her research project to Dr. Tasha Inniss, a LSAMP program director at the National Science Foundation, during the sixth annual Garden State LSAMP Conference. LSAMP scholars receive a research stipend and help navigating a path through the world of undergraduate STEM education.

High-school students assay (analyze the quantity of metal) magnetite ore samples using magnetic separation techniques. The lesson was part of the Highlands to Piedmont: Geoscience Scholars Alliance, a NSF-funded program designed to encourage minority students to study the geosciences. In addition to classroom visits, the program included summer camps, museum days and curriculum development in the Newark Public School District.

A poster session at the sixth annual Garden State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) research conference, held in October 2014. The Garden State LSAMP supports nearly 3,000 students at eight institutions in New Jersey; the goal is to boost the number of graduates from underrepresented minority students in science and engineering disciplines.
