For combining information from physical oceanography, evolutionary genetics and geography to determine why the tropical marine seas where the Indian and Pacific Oceans intersect show the highest biological diversity in the world's oceans. His interdisciplinary study is central to courses he is creating for students to understand evolutionary differences within and among the seas.
