Privacy Act System of Records Notices

The Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C. § 552a, regulates the collection, maintenance, use and dissemination of personal information by federal executive branch agencies. The purpose of the Privacy Act is to balance the government's need to maintain information about individuals with the rights of individuals to be protected against unwarranted invasions of their privacy stemming from federal agencies' collection, maintenance, use and disclosure of personal information about them.

Below is a listing of systems of records maintained by NSF. A system of records is defined by the Privacy Act as "a group of any records under the control of any agency from which information is retrieved by the name of the individual or by some identifying number, symbol, or other identifying particular assigned to the individual." 5 U.S.C. § 552a(a)(5). Rules exempting systems of records from certain Privacy Act requirements can be found in 28 CFR Part 16, Subpart E.

Note: Some NSF systems of records are exempt from certain general routine uses as stated in the system of records notice.

Some executive branch agencies have Government-wide systems of records that may be applicable to information collected by NSF. A complete listing of all executive branch systems of records can be found at http://www.ofr.gov/.

This page contains links to current NSF Privacy Act systems of records notices. When NSF adds a new system of records or updates or withdraws a system, NSF will reflect the change on this site as soon as possible after the effective date indicated in the Federal Register Notice announcing the action.

On December 22, 2014, NSF published a notice in the Federal Register proposing to amend five existing systems of records and NSF's general routine uses. The Federal Register Notice is available at the following location. This Notice became effective on February 2, 2015.
