When People Worry About Math, the Brain Feels the Pain

Using brain scans, researchers at the University of Chicago determined that mathematics anxiety can prompt a response in the brain similar to when a person experiences physical pain. The research shows that brain areas of highly math-anxious people overlap with the same brain areas that register the threat of bodily harm-and in some cases, physical pain.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
