    This series reviews trends in research and development expenditures within academia and federally funded R&D centers in the United States and outlying areas.

    NOTE: The Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges collected data for 1972–2009. For current data see the Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) series.
  • Business and Industrial R&D[+]
    This series reviews trends in research and development activities of the U.S. business sector. Since 2008, these data have been collected by the Business R&D and Innovation Survey (BRDIS), successor to the Survey of Industrial Research and Development.   • Characteristics of Recent College Graduates[+]
    This series presents information and data on the characteristics of persons receiving bachelor's or master's degrees in science or engineering fields from U.S. academia institutions.
  • Characteristics of Scientists and Engineers with U.S. Doctorates[+]
    This series examines trends in U.S. employment and related labor information for persons holding doctoral degrees in science and engineering. Information is available on demographic and employment characteristics of the nation's doctoral scientists and engineers.
  • Doctoral Scientists and Engineers Profiles[+]
    This series presents tables that represent profiles of employed doctoral scientists and engineers. Profiles include reasons for making certain choices in employment situations, work-related activities, and special-module data collected in each survey cycle.
  • Facilities for S&E Research[+]
    This series provides data on the amount, construction, repair/renovation and funding of science and engineering (S&E) research facilities and computing and networking capacities at U.S. colleges, universities, and nonprofit biomedical research institutions.
  • Federal Funds for R&D[+]
    This series reviews current and historical trends in Federal obligations and funding for research and development in science and engineering.
  • Federal R&D Funding by Budget Function[+]
    This series presents information on Federal funding of research and development (R&D) and the R&D plant components of agency programs. The R&D data are classified into Federal budget function categories, such as defense, health, space, and energy.
  • Federal S&E Support to Universities, Colleges, and NPOs[+]
    This series provides data and analyses on Federal science and engineering support to universities, colleges, and nonprofit institutions.
  • Federal Scientists and Engineers[+]
    This series provides data on the characteristics and status of scientists and engineers employed by the U.S. Federal Government. Various demographic data are included in the analyses.
  • Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in S&E[+]
    This series provides data on the number and characteristics of science and engineering graduate students enrolled and postdocs working in academic U.S. institutions.
  • Higher Education Research and Development (HERD)[+]
    This series provides current and historical trends on the amounts and types of research and development activities at U.S. colleges and universities. Beginning with 2010, data are collected using the Higher Education R&D (HERD) Survey, successor to the Survey of R&D Expenditures at Universities and Colleges.

  • International Investment and R&D Data Link[+]
    This series presents data from a project that links business and industrial R&D survey data from NCSES to international investment survey data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The combined data sets provide information on the R&D activities of U.S. multinational companies (MNCs) and foreign MNCs with U.S. activities.

  • National Patterns of R&D Resources[+]
    This series presents trend data on the overall research and development effort in the United States. Information includes R&D expenditures by sector of performance, source of funds, character of R&D work, R&D-to-GDP ratios, and international comparisons.
  • Postdoctorates at Federally Funded R&D Centers[+]
    This series provides data on the demographic characteristics, research fields, and sources of support of postdoctoral researchers (postdocs) employed at federally funded R&D centers (FFRDCs).
  • R&D Expenditures at Federally Funded R&D Centers[+]
    This publication series includes current and historical trends in research and development expenditures at federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs). Previous year tables can be found in the Academic R&D Expenditures reports series at http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/rdexpenditures/.

    This series provides information on the number and types of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees awarded by U.S. institutions. It also provides information on the characteristics of the degree recipients.
  • S&E Degrees, By Race/Ethnicity of Recipients[+]
    This series provides time series information on the number of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees awarded by U.S. institutions, by major field of degree and by race/ethnicity and sex of degree recipient.
  • S&E Doctorate Awards[+]
    This series presents data and trends on doctorates awarded in science and engineering. Information is also available on characteristics of doctorate recipients, institutions awarding doctorates, and postgraduation plans of doctorate recipients.
  • Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians in Industry[+]
    This series provides data on the number of scientists, engineers and technicians employed in the U.S. economy.
  • SESTAT: Characteristics of Scientists and Engineers in the United States[+]
    Tabular data, generated from the SESTAT data system, provides a profile the U.S. science and engineering (S&E) workforce. The tabulations include characteristics of all U.S. scientists and engineers, employed scientists and engineers, and salaries information for scientists and engineers. Data are presented by degree field and occupation, and by characteristics such as sex, race, ethnicity, age and citizenship. Learn about the redesign of SESTAT.
  • State Government Research and Development[+]
    Data on R&D activity performed and funded by each of the nation's 50 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
