Zhi (Gerry) Tian is a Program Director for the Communications, Circuits and Sensing Systems (CCSS)  program in the Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems (ECCS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Her research interests lie in digital and wireless communications, wireless sensor networks, and signal processing.  Dr. Tian joined NSF from Michigan Technological University in November 2011 through the IPA agreement.

At Michigan Tech, Dr. Tian is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.  Her areas of expertise have included wideband and ultra-wideband communications, cognitive radios, multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) systems, compressed sensing, statistical sensor array processing, adaptive filtering, distributed information processing and networking in wireless sensor networks, source localization, tracking and data fusion, and probabilistic Bayesian inference. She has published more than 120 journal and conference papers and several book chapters.  

Dr. Tian obtained her B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering (Automatic Control) from the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, and the M. S. and Ph.D. degrees from George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. She studied in the graduate program of the department of Automation at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and was a research assistant in the Center of Excellence in Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C3I) of George Mason University.

Dr. Tian is actively involved with the IEEE. She is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing for Communications and Networking Technical Committee (SPCOMTC) and the IEEE Wireless Communications Technical Committee (WTC). She was a Symposium Technical Program Committee Chair for IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) in 2007 and IEEE Globecom in 2011. She delivered technical tutorials on topics related to cognitive radios and compressed sensing in several international conferences. She has served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Transaction on Signal Processing, and also as guest editor in some special issues. She received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation in 2003.
