Biography:

Maria Zemankova is managing proposals and awards in areas of data, information and knowledge management.

Maria Zemankova joined the National Science Foundation as a Program Director in the Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) Division in 1988. She has been instrumental in developing initiatives on Scientific Databases, Digital Libraries, and Biodiversity and Ecosystem Informatics, and has been active in cross-disciplinary initiatives, including Information Technology Research, Wireless Information Systems, Science of Design, Cyber Trust, Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation, Research Infrastructure, INSPIRE, Smart Health and Big Data. In addition, she has been involved in programs aimed at supporting technology transfer, Small Business Innovation Research and Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison and in educational programs, Research Experience for Undergraduates and Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education, and served on interagency working group for Global Change Data & Information Systems and international organization Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

Maria Zemankova was born in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). After grammar school she studied at a computer programmer and operator school and Mathematics at the Masaryk University in Brno. She moved to Egypt where she received her B.S. (with Highest Honors) in Mathematics and Computing with minor in Psychology from the American University in Cairo in 1977. Since 1977 she has lived in the US and received  M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Florida State University in 1979 and 1983, respectively.

From 1983-84 she was a developer in a database start-up company, she was on faculty of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville 1984-88, collaborated with researchers at the Oakridge National Laboratory and held a visiting position at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign 1986-87. Maria Zemankova was a founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems, served as the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, and has been on program or organizing committees of numerous conferences and workshops.  She is a member of ACM, AAAI, IEEE, Sigma Xi, and in 1992, she received the ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award.

Her research interests include intelligent information systems; information/knowledge organization and evolution, management of uncertainty (fuzzy logic), knowledge discovery environments, data mining, privacy/security, visualization, information retrieval, text mining, social media, multimedia systems, spatio-temporal systems (GIS), scientific databases and process modeling.
