<title>Human Disease Leptospirosis Identified in New Species, the Banded Mongoose, in Africa</title>

And the banded mongoose carries it.</p><p>Leptospirosis is the world's most common illness transmitted to humans by animals.  It's a two-phase disease that begins with flu-like symptoms.
