Dr. Nico Habermann, Assistant Director of the CISE Directorate made the following points concerning women in CISE, in his presentation at the symposium: oThe current percentage of women in computing disciplines is too low and these percentages drop as women advance through high school and graduate school oThe CISE Directorate is committed to encouraging and supporting activities that will contribute significantly to increasing the number of women qualified to participate in research and educational activities in the CISE disciplines. oIn order to provide a focus around which opportunities can be provided to universities, the CISE Directorate has a goal that at least 45% of graduate students in CISE disciplines will be women by the year 2000. Some recently funded proposals supporting this goal include: oWorkshop on Expanding Opportunities for Women in CISE October 25-27, 1992. Susan Conry of Clarkson University organized a 2-day workshop in which representatives from academia, industry and government examined and identified areas that were important for attracting and retaining women in academic careers in computing. oWorkshop on Academic Careers for Women in CISE - Federated Computing Research Conference, May 15, 1993: Cindy Brown of Northeastern University and Rick Weingarten of CRA organized a 1-day workshop on career management for female graduate students and new faculty members. oWindows of Opportunity - Symposium for Female Students in Computing May 22-23, 1993: Rick Weingarten of CRA and Dianne Martin of George Washington University organized a symposium for 200 undergraduate and graduate female students. oDistributed Research and Mentor Project for Undergraduate Females in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, Summers of 1994, 1995: Joe O'Rourke of Smith College and Rick Weingarten of CRA will coordinate a project matching 20-30 female undergraduate students with female professors for a summer of research. oNSF Graduate Research Fellowships - CISE providing for additional fellowships for Women in CISE fields. The Directorate encourages the external CISE community to suggest additional activities for ensuring full participation for women in graduate school in the CISE disciplines. If you have any ideas or suggestions, contact Caroline Wardle at cwardle@nsf.gov or John Cherniavsky at jchernia@nsf.gov. ------------------- WORKSHOP ON EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS Dr. Joe Turner of Clemson University organized a workshop in Washington D.C. on May 10-11 on projects funded by the Educational Infrastructure Program during 1990-1992. The workshop reviewed the projects, and analyzed and evaluated how effective they were in addressing the needs of computer science and engineering education. Particular attention was given to the dissemination mechanisms that are being used or planned in the projects. The workshop participants were the PIs or other representatives from the projects that have been funded during the first three years of the Educational Infrastructure Program, and observers from NSF. A report on the workshop is expected to be available by the end of July and may be requested from Dr. Caroline Wardle (cwardle@nsf.gov). --------------- NSF RELOCATION TO ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA Summer-Fall 1993 In Summer 1993, NSF will begin a move to a new facility in Arlington, Virginia, approximately four miles to the west of the present Washington, DC location. The move will allow all NSF operations and conference activities to be consolidated at a single site. The relocation activity will span a four to six month period. Specific information regarding the relocation of individual directorates will be shared with you when the schedule is finalized. The plan is to make the relocation transparent to our clientele and assure a continued high level of service during the transition. For example: oFoundation personnel will continue to be reached by telephone by dialing their present numbers. If the individual has moved, Call Forwarding or Call Intercept features will automatically direct the caller to the new number. oAll proposals and correspondence will be received at the 1800 G Street address until explicit information is given to use a new address. In addition, mail will be transferred between the two locations. It is designed to insure the safe receipt of all correspondence directed to NSF. oProgram Announcements will be reviewed individually to assure that program officer contact and proposal submission instructions reflect current and accurate information for the specified program and deadline. oReview panelists and other NSF guests will be advised of meeting locations and provided with maps and other travel information well in advance of any scheduled agency visits. oElectronic information systems including STIS and the Grants Bulletin Board will remain fully operational during the relocation transition and will, in fact, serve as the most efficient way to learn current information on move status. oAn Important Notice will be mailed to each of our constituents when the move schedule is finalized and specific information can be communicated. oNSF will use the "Bulletin" and other agency-developed publications to reflect current information on the relocation effort in addition to electronic mail. ---------------- CISE PERSONNEL CHANGES Dr. Susan Gerhart, Division Director of the Division of Computer and Computation Research, will be leaving July 1 to become Director, RICIS (Research Institute in Computing and Information Science) at University of Houston at Clear Lake. She will work with NASA/JSC on technology transfer and research in areas such as systems engineering and quality management, as well as expanding partnerships among the University, NASA, and other industrial affiliates. Dr. Thomas Weber, Division Director of the Division of Advanced Scientific Computing, has become the Division Director of the Division of Information Systems which is responsible for the internal information systems at NSF. A search for replacements for Drs. Gerhart and Weber is currently underway. If you are interested in either position or know someone who would be qualified and interested, please contact Dr. A. Nico Habermann, Assistant Director of NSF for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate at (202) 357-7936 or at nhaberma@nsf.gov. Dr. Nat Macon, Program Director for Software Systems and Software Engineering, retired in January. Professor Krishna Kavi, Univ. of Texas - Arlington, will join NSF as the Program Director for Software Systems beginning part-time during the summer, and becoming full-time in September. Ms. Helen Gill, MITRE Corporation, will join NSF as Program Director for Software Engineering, beginning part-time during the summer and becoming full-time in September. Dr. Forbes Lewis, Program Director for Program Languages and Compilers, will become Program Director, Special Projects and Program Director, CISE Research Instrumentation Program in the Office of Cross-Disciplinary Activities. **************************** CISE Newsletter Editor John R.
