Title : Fuel spill reports-Format Type : Antarctic EAM NSF Org: OD / OPP Date : February 05, 1991 File : opp93022 DIVISION OF POLAR PROGRAMS OFFICE OF SAFETY, ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH 202/357-7766 MEMORANDUM Date: February 5, 1991 From: Environmental Officer, DPP Subject: Environmental Action Memorandum (Threshold for Fuel Spill Reports/Format for Fuel Spill Reports) To: Files (S.7 - Environment) Accidents involving spillage of petroleum products constitute an important consideration for the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP). They are also a very controversial antarctic environmental pollution issue. In order to adequately address knowledge, and prevention, of such accidents discussions and consultations among the Division's Program Managers in Washington and on-site at antarctic facilities during the 1990-1991 research season focused on how to best report these accidents. It was determined that all noticeable spills should be reported (see Attachment A). Also, format and procedures for reporting such spills within the USAP were clarified (see Attachment B). These actions are expected to improve the ability of the USAP to fully document, analyze, and prevent spillage of petroleum products.
